Meal Prep 101: Getting Started Guide

The Power of Meal Prep

Are you constantly scrambling to figure out what to eat for your meals? Do you find yourself reaching for unhealthy convenience foods when you’re short on time? Well, my friend, let me introduce you to the life-changing world of meal prepping.

I’ve been a meal prep devotee for over a decade, and let me tell you, it has been a total game-changer for my health, my wallet, and my sanity. Meal prepping is the practice of preparing your meals, or even just the components of your meals, in advance. It’s like having your own personal freezer-to-table service, except you get to control exactly what goes into your food.

See, when you meal prep, you’re essentially taking the guesswork out of what to eat. No more staring blankly into the fridge, wondering what you can throw together for a quick and healthy meal. Instead, you’ve got your delicious, nutrient-dense creations all ready to go, waiting patiently in their cute little containers to be devoured.

But the benefits of meal prep extend far beyond just the convenience factor. It can also be a powerful tool for sticking to your budget and your nutrition goals. Think about it – when you have a fridge full of pre-portioned, home-cooked meals, you’re much less likely to succumb to the siren call of the drive-thru or the vending machine. And that translates to big savings, both for your wallet and your waistline.

Where to Start

Now, I know what you might be thinking – “Meal prepping? Isn’t that like, a million hours of work in the kitchen every Sunday?” Well, my friends, I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way. Meal prepping can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be.

The key is to start small and build from there. Begin by prepping just one meal a day, like your lunch or your breakfast. Focus on foods and recipes that you already know and love, so you’re not adding extra stress to the equation. As you get more comfortable with the process, you can gradually start prepping more meals and experimenting with new recipes.

One of my favorite hacks is to do what I call “mini meal preps.” Instead of going all-in and prepping a week’s worth of meals at once, I’ll sometimes just prep the components of a meal – like chopping up some veggies or marinating a protein. That way, I can still have the convenience of pre-prepped ingredients without feeling like I’m locked into a single dish for days on end.

And remember, meal prepping isn’t a one-size-fits-all endeavor. What works for me might not work for you, and that’s totally fine. The beauty of it is that you can tailor it to your own unique lifestyle and preferences. So don’t be afraid to get creative and find a system that truly resonates with you.

Mastering the Meal Prep Process

Okay, so you’re convinced that meal prepping is the way to go. But where do you even start? Well, my friend, let me walk you through the step-by-step process that has worked so well for me over the years.

First and foremost, it’s all about having a plan. Before you even set foot in the kitchen, take some time to map out your meals for the week. Think about your schedule, your cravings, and your nutritional needs, and build a menu that checks all the boxes.

Next, it’s time to get organized. I’m talking full-on, Marie Kondo-style organization here. Gather all of your ingredients, measure them out, and have everything prepped and ready to go before you start cooking. This is what the French call “mise en place,” and it’s a total game-changer for meal prep efficiency.

As the folks at Budget Bytes put it, “Once I have everything organized and my measurements written down, I open up MyFitnessPal on my phone. Hit the menu, then choose Meals, Recipes & Foods. Click the Plus button at the top right, name your meal, then scan and enter your ingredients into the app.”

This not only helps you keep track of your nutrition and portion sizes, but it also makes the actual cooking process a breeze. No more frantically searching for that one elusive spice or trying to remember how much of each ingredient you used.

And when it comes to storage, the options are endless. As the team at Pretty & Smart Co. suggests, look for airtight, BPA-free containers that allow you to neatly divide your foods. Glass containers are a great choice for their durability and reusability, but you can also find some excellent non-glass options that are perfect for meal prepping on the go.

Finding Your Meal Prep Groove

Now, I know what you might be thinking – “This all sounds great, but what the heck do I actually make?” Well, my friend, the possibilities are truly endless when it comes to meal prepping. The key is to start with flavors and ingredients that you already know and love.

For example, if you’re a big fan of stir-fries, try prepping a big batch of your favorite protein, some chopped veggies, and a flavorful sauce. Or if you’re more of a bowl person, whip up a delicious grain-based base, like quinoa or brown rice, and top it with a variety of roasted veggies, lean proteins, and crunchy toppings.

And don’t be afraid to get creative with your ingredients. As the folks on Reddit suggest, you can even use frozen meals or pre-cooked proteins as a starting point for your meal prep creations. The key is to think of meal prepping as a way to make your life easier, not harder.

One of my personal favorite meal prep hacks is to utilize my slow cooker or Instant Pot. These magical appliances can turn even the most basic of ingredients into something truly delicious with minimal effort on my part. And since they often yield a large quantity of food, I can easily portion out the leftovers for quick and easy grab-and-go meals throughout the week.

But perhaps the best part of meal prepping is that it’s a journey, not a destination. As you get more comfortable with the process, feel free to experiment and try new things. Who knows, you might just discover your new favorite recipe in the process!

Embracing the Meal Prep Lifestyle

Now, I know what you might be thinking – “Meal prepping sounds like a lot of work. How am I ever going to find the time?” Well, my friends, let me let you in on a little secret: we all have the same 24 hours in a day. It’s all about how we choose to use them.

As the fitness enthusiast on Reddit put it, “Look. we are all busy, we all have stuff going on, and we all have time for meal prepping. It’s so easy as a Monday through Friday-er to get off track or not feel like making something healthy because you’re tired after working all day and maybe hitting the gym after work or taking the kids to practice. Take-out may be an easy option for a lot of us, but it’s also the expensive and unhealthy option about 99% of the time. Save yourself the dilemma and prepare to have a healthy week ahead of time!”

And you know what? They’re absolutely right. Meal prepping might take a little bit of time upfront, but the long-term benefits are truly invaluable. Not only does it save you time and money, but it also helps you stay on track with your health and fitness goals.

Plus, with a bit of practice, meal prepping can actually become a fun and creative activity. As the contributor on Reddit suggests, “Set some goals and attempt your own meal prep this week! If you’re looking to get your fitness on track with your eating habits check out my blog post about jump starting your fitness routine here.”

So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to embrace the meal prep lifestyle and take control of your health, your wallet, and your sanity. Who knows, you might just discover a newfound love for cooking in the process. And hey, if all else fails, at least you’ll have a fridge full of delicious, nutritious meals to keep you fueled and energized all week long.

Happy prepping, my friends! Let’s do this.
