It’s that time of year again! The leaves are changing, the weather is cooling down, and it’s apple season. These baked apple donuts with cinnamon and nutmeg are a delicious way to celebrate this fall favorite. They’re moist on the inside while being crisp on the outside – you’ll never want another donut again once you try these!donuts

Ingredients

  • One cup of apple sauce (unsweetened)
  • Two cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting the surface and dough. For a richer taste, use half whole wheat white or spelt flour. I used regular all purpose with great results! The moistness was perfect without being too much like a muffin.
  • Two tablespoons of brown sugar (optional – you can also use maple syrup)
  • One teaspoon baking powder
  • A quarter teaspoon nutmeg, cinnamon and salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease the doughnut pan with oil or butter. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Add the apple sauce and stir until just combined (don’t overmix). Spoon into doughnut pan, filling each cavity about half to three quarters full. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle of one comes out clean. Don’t overcook – they should still be moist. Let the doughnuts cool for a few minutes in the pan before placing on cooling rack.

How to make the Dough?

  • Mix the yeast, milk and sugar in a bowl. Let it sit for about five minutes to let the yeast activate.
  • Next add the flour, salt and eggs then stir until everything is combined into a dough. Cover with plastic wrap or towel and let rise at room temperature (about 30 min).
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray it generously with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • When dough has risen, place on a well floured surface and roll out into about ½ inch thickness (it should be big enough so you can cut six donuts). Use either round cookie cutter, a glass or a cup to cut the donuts.
  • Once you have your six doughnuts in place on lined baking sheet and let them rise for about 15 minutes before putting them into the oven.

How to make the Donuts?

  • First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Then, combine all of your ingredients in a large bowl and mix until smooth with an electric mixer or stand mixer. Stir until everything is mixed together into a thick batter. Use this time to grease up your donut pans! You can use cooking spray if you wish.
  • Next, fill the donut pans with your batter. I would recommend using a large ziplock bag to pour it in so you can cut off excess air and avoid messy spills! Use an ice cream scoop or spoon to transfer all of your dough into each mold until they are about three quarters full.
  • Bake the donuts for about 15 minutes, or until they are cooked through. To check if your doughnuts are done, you can tap one on top of its mold and listen to see if it sounds hollow. If so, then they’re ready!
  • Allow them to cool before removing from their pans with a spoon or spatula. **TIP: You can use a knife around the edges to help pop them out!
  • Now that your donuts are cooled, you can move on with making your glaze! Melt some butter in one bowl and combine all of your ingredients into another. Then, slowly add in powdered sugar until it is thick but still pourable.donuts

Environmental Protection

When you make baked apple donuts, they can be good for the environment. First of all, since there is no frying involved and it uses less oil than regular doughnuts which use about a cup. Secondly, baking them reduces the amount of preservatives that may have been used in some fried or commercially made ones. And lastly, they are healthier because they don’t have the same amount of sugar and fat as regular doughnuts, which can be made with white flour and shortening.

Safety Tips

  • Be sure to keep your hands and surfaces clean while cooking.
  • Don’t leave the oven unattended when baking.
  • Be careful not to burn yourself with hot oil or liquids.
  • Be sure that your oven is properly preheated.
  • Don’t leave knives or other cooking utensils on the countertop once you’ve finished using them.

Yes, you can absolutely bake these apple cinnamon doughnuts without using a special pastry ring or molder!
