For me, it was important to learn how to cook Filipino food not only so that I can show my US-born son about my heritage and my culture through food; but also for my son to experience and embrace his heritage. Alas, I have been successful — although he speaks Tagalog with an American twang, the Pinoy in him is evident with his love of dinuguan, adobo, and all Filipino food.

  32. Jannesse says:

It is important to learn how to cook because you’ll spend less, and get to eat better, healthy food. It is undeniably one of the basic skills one has to learn to survive. Also, as the old saying goes, “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” is definitely true. I am now a proud wife to a man who loves and likes all that I cook and serve him.

  33. Anna says:

It is important to learn how to cook because it is through cooking that I can impart my “Filipino-ness” to my children. Although my non-Flipino husband and children understand Tagalog, I want them to really absorb my culture. And what is the best way to do that? Isn’t it through food? When my kids become adult and have families of their own, Tagalog may not be even understood anymore but the taste of our food will carry on with them.

  34. Benedict says:

It’s a skill you’ll use for the rest of your life….Cooking your own food even once or twice a week is the stuff of radical change. You’ll spend less, eat better (or at least what you want, and in your pajamas, if you like) and feel in charge of a part of your life previously owned by others.

  35. Jeng Laureta says:

“A way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” and so the saying goes. Learning how to cook is so important not only for homemakers like me but for everyone else because whether we like it or not, it is the food that always takes the center stage in every occasion of our lives. I’ve been cooking simple meals for my family for almost 14 years now and I feel proud when they prefer my cooking over some fancy restaurant food. It makes all the chopping and sauteing worthwhile.

  36. Learning to cook is important for me because it makes our lives so much bearable. Even though we don’t have much, a delicious meal certainly makes us feel as though we’re kings and queens of the world. Cooking and baking is also my way of showing my family and my friends that I care for them. Friends that I cook for know that I do it rarely and they feel special because I cooked for them. Lastly, I do believe that cooking is a way to a anyone’s heart, especially mine. :)

  37. Carol B. says:

There are a lot of reasons why one must learn how to cook. My 3 most important reasons are:

    1. Safety – because I know what I’m putting into my and my family’s mouth.

    2. It is my stress-buster and outlet for my creativity. For me, cooking is not a responsibility because I enjoy every minute of it. It gives me satisfaction to discover new dishes that my family loves and improve the ones I already knew. Your blog encourages me to be more adventurous.

    3. It is in a way a blanket of security. Like if I invite friends to my party they would surely come because for them the food I serve is a treat. Also, it is a way to secure my place in my husband’s heart. I trained my husband’s tastebuds to have my cooking to be the STANDARD. He may find prettier and sexier girls but they will suffer in comparison when it comes to serving him meals.

  38. mitch says:

  39. Aubrey says:

It’s important to learn how to cook because you can not live off take-outs or dine-ins. Also as a mother it’s a way of passing on what your own mother (in some cases father) have done too. What better way to say and show your own family how much you appreciate your own parents or grandparents and heritage than by cooking them meals that have stories. Learning to cook is of course learning to be healthy too since you will know what goes in to your meals, how to prepare delicious and healthy foods to the people you love.

    pero iba na shempre ngayon.
importante na ngayon yung asawa mo, anak mo, na meron kang mashe-share sa kanila(kahit papano) na magagamit din nila sa hinaharap.

cooking and food are two of the few things that all humans, regardless of origin, have in common. they are unifying in their simplicity and complexities.

    b. Self-expression – because more than all the spices and seasonings in the world, it’s the selfless love we put into our cooking that truly brings out the flavor. Cooking for my loved ones is my own li’l way of saying — “i love u and i care for u.”

When I was a child living in the Philippines with my parents I never have to worry about food. I would wake up in the morning or head home after school, breakfast, lunch, or dinner is at the table. Now, living afar from home, not only have I learned how to cook on my own but also I”ve learned how to grocery shop wisely. I”ve opened my eyes to ingredients I have not heard of and unfamiliar with. I”ve learned how to cook not just Filipino dishes but dishes from foreign countries as well. It is so much better to have a home cooked meal…it”s cheaper and a lot healthier. From time to time I would search on the internet for a good recipe to follow and have my boyfriend as a guinea pig. I love to be surrounded with friends and loved ones talking and having a great time enjoying my home cooked meal; it is a wonderful feeling of achievement. Someday, cooking will be one of the lessons I will have to teach my children and it will be something they will have for the rest of their lives.

Thank you for sharing your recipe, Connie. I”ve learned how to make Escabeche, Menudo, Sotanghon, Chicken Burgers and Atchara from you!!

What is the happiness? Someone often complains about the hardships of life, unlucky, but the happiness is not far to you. It is actually a kind of ability to be happy, should ask oneself first, have experienced and born happy ability oneself, whether have taken the ability that the happiness gives to others. Life is just like a course, the cooking that need our coming meticulously too. It is good too to be happy, it is good too to be happy, experience with the soul and soul , create with one’s own hands. The life of quick rhythm and enormous pressure brought in keen competition at work make everybody regard warm home as the best haven , let the tired out heart get warm consoling the book there , let the tired out body obtain motive force of love. The love is good too, the kindred is good too, it is present to need our true feelings. Can taste the taste of life with soul whenever and wherever possible , just there is happiness that can be discussed. Harmonic family, the relative’s consideration is happy , the delicious dinner is the happy flavour unable to express with the language even more in the dusk, superb cooking technology make dining table enjoyment heighten , make people to be comfortable to refresh oneself not merely, make family life by bringing some temperament and interest even more. The taste of the dish does not actually have a lot of relations with the soy sauce or the onion , the more important thing is to throw into their care to family in the housewives menu, the ones that overwrite and see the child and husband while eating the delicious meal with relish are gratified and satisfied . The housewife is a core of a family, she not only wants the food with delicious cooking, is it go cooking happy these course of life diligently to want even more. The relation of the love and delicacy has never been separated . The man’s hearts and the man’s stomaches are that the first pulse is the same even more. Hi! I’m a 19 year old young man, I really think that need to know how to cook!!

Both of my parents work, and we have no househelp at home. So for years, we’ve been just buying food from the local carinderia. (P35 ulam feeds the whole family!) It’s practical, cheap, and fast. We only had to worry about cooking rice.

Eventually, I got used to the tastes of carinderia ulam. They taste nice, but of course, they lack the element of ‘familiarity’. Familiarity not being common, but being made by a member of the family! (haha) I wished to make our food more ‘personal’ and intimate, to let my family see the viand done 100% at home.

As a result, it’s been months since I tried cooking for the family. The experience has been fun, and it was worthwhile (even if my family suddenly turned into my guinea pigs). Being the one who took the initiative to cook for the household, I tried many experiments – from crunchy breaded squidballs to stir-fried malunggay chicken. There were many failures, but there are some dishes that they liked! I hope that eventually, I’ll be an expert when it comes to food. Sooner or later, I hope they’ll trust me with their tongues.

I’m a 19 year old son, and I need to break stereotypes, and I really need to know how to cook!!

  73. Samuel C. Briguela says:

  75. Nica says:

Food is the basic need of human being therefore it is important to know how to prepare and cook different kinds of foods. Different foods needs different approach in cooking thats why it is important to know how to cook, even just the basic cooking methods.

We cook foods to destroy the microorganisms that are harmful to us, to enhance the flavor and texture of food and to improve the nutritive value of a food. Having the knowledge of different kinds and styles of cooking food, we will be able to know how to alter, enhance and improve a certain foods so that they will not be wasted.

And one of the reasons of why do we have to learn to cook is to SATISFY our palates. One good food is worth a thousand words.
    :)

  76. Christine says:

I learned to cook when I was 11 years old, we lived in Dubai back then with no maid. Both my parents work and if its time to cook for lunch or dinner, mom would talk to me on the phone instructing me every step of whatever viand I’d be cooking for that meal. I would remember her saying “pag light brown na yung bawang lagay mo na yung sibuyas, transparent na ba? O pwede mo na isunod yung kamatis.”

I’m married now and I admit it truly flatters me whenever my husband would say “Grabe, sarap mo talaga magluto”

To this day I would still call mom to ask her how to cook this certain food and we would have that same type of conversation we had back then.

So why is it important to learn how to cook? Because you can’t buy (along with take out, lol!) that satisfaction home cooked meals give the people you cook for.
    :)

  77. rachelle sy says:

for me, learning to cook is like learning to tie one’s own shoelaces. it means independence and empowerment. there’s nothing like the sense of achievement when one cooks a dish from scratch and seeing with one’s own eyes that the different basic ingredients can be mixed and made into something tasty, filling, and heartwarming.

While I have a busy career here in Saudi Arabia, to me cooking is a passion and one that relieves my stress and my food cravings too. I”m taking the cooking duties at home because my wife don”t know how to cook but she takes up washing anything, ironing clothes and stuff like that. Married life is a partnership so if one feels challenged in an undertaking like cooking, the other one should take up the slack. So basically learning to cook is a survival from hunger and marital bliss.

Cooking gives me delight and joy most especially when you received good feedback or praises from what you have served. Life may not always offer sunshine and happiness but with small efforts, you can give yourself a bit more of both. Same way in cooking when somebody appreciates what you cook it brings happiness and sunshine to your soul. It gives you a “high feeling”.

I love to read cook books and when i met my husband, i used my skills in cooking and he loves it very much.

  90. lee skmt says:

Not only learn to cook but cook well. That will be one’s lasting legacy or impression. People will tend to remember that excellent dish you served them rather than you being nasty. Friends will trust the parties you host and will come for the food even if the venue or event or the host himself suck. “Lydia is such a bi**”", “Yeah sweetie, but you gotta admit she makes terrific steak!”
If you don’t know how to cook, your friends and love ones will be doomed to ordering pizza or takeouts forever just to escape that dish you lovingly experimented on. “Uhh, no thanks honey but Chowking delivery is on the way!”
Why I say this, I only remember the names of my relatives who cook really well. I travel 2 hours from Manila to a party in Pampanga because I know I won’t be disappointed.

  91. “As music is to the soul, strumming notes and stringing melodies to express a universal spiritual language of understanding, so is cooking to the heart. sprinkling spices that flavor affection and stirring ingredients to simmer love. Both an art, both a language to its own, which one cannot be without in order to be fully expressive, to be fully alive.”

I live and work abroad with my family and life is made more difficult if you go home after a hard day’s work to have only de latang corned beef or tuna and instant noodles in the table for your dinner. I realized from this experience the importance of learning how to cook if I have to provide my family with healthy and nutritious food. Thanks to your blog, we are now having real, nutritious, and tasty food in our table cooked by yours truly and my wife.

  95. I cook because it is in my blood, coming from generations of renowned “fiesta” cooks from Cavite. Cooking is not only an art but a way you get in touch with your ancestral roots. Everytime I prepare something that from a family recipe, I can hear my grandmother (mother and even great uncle) tell me how to chop the vegetables, when to add the broth and what seasoning to use. And cooking for my own family, I now pass it on to my sons who have developed their own passion for cooking. It is no wonder that I have a married a great cook from Kentucky, USA.

  96. jowie says:

because when you know how to cook, you become more than just a person who knows how to cook. the wonders it does for the soul simply outweighs all the practical benefits considered.
you become creative, you become flexible in budgeting, you become a source of knowledge to friends and if you blog, you become a handy help not just to friends but to the whole world. :-) and you become more open to experiments – be it in cooking or other activities. eventually, you become more confident. and most of all, you become an inspiration. and life simply becomes more meaningful.

At first, learning to cook at home meant independence and saving money because I could prepare my favourite dishes even when I’m far from home and be able to do it cheaply. As time went by, cooking (and eating) became another thing my husband and I could enjoy together and we realised that it is not only practical, but also is an art by itself.
Recently, we’ve decided to lose weight and knowing what exactly goes into our food also made us made healthier choices.

So really, cooking is not only about nourishing our bodies, but also about nourishing our hearts and souls.

  105. Johnvir dela Cruz says:

I care mostly about learning to cook Filipino food right now because I grew up in California and I don’t know much about my country and its heritage. I married a blonde blue eyed girl and we moved to Brussels Belgium, so cooking for me tells a story about were I came from and I love the look in peoples eyes when they first fall in love with filipino food. To me, they have fallen in love with the filipinos themselves. I also hope my son will be proud of his filipino half through knowing how to cook.

Learning how to cook surprises me as I realize that I can do special meals that I never imagined I could. Its so fulfilling to taste that wonderful recipe which I just learned and thought that can only be tasted when I go to restaurant. There is this warm feeling inside of me when I see my family with looks on their faces that tells me how much they appreciate even just for the effort of wanting to please their appetite. This is also a chance for me to bond with my daughter because she watches me how I prepare the recipe. I hope this will encourage her to take an interest in cooking as well. And for that “wow” look from my husband that tells me he is pleased with my new found learning skill.

Learning to whip something ordinary to an EXTRAORDINARY dish is the greatest feat a cook, expert or novice, could have.. Learning the craft is somehow an unending process because possibilities are endless.. No one can actually rest its laurels and say that i’m the greatest cook and i know it all.. And it is only by sharing ideas and learning experiences through get togethers and of course, through internet forum and blogs that we could somehow tweak and tick our recipe to achieve that “PERFECT” dish..
No dish is actually perfect until you tasted the NEXT one.. And so the cycle begins anew..

Cooking burnt food/salty food is a way of saying “I am mad, I do not like the way you are treating me”. It is also a way of demanding without getting obvious “I will cook bulalo tonight (come home early)”. Lastly, and my favorite reason for cooking is cooking special food as it is a way of saying “thank you for being with me”nad “thank you for coming into my life”.

Gudpm! im Joseph Robilla from Davao del Sur. im 21 years old.

What i mean is ung katulad sa inyong mga mayaman.

Thank you and Gudnyt…

  148. Veronica T. Gabaldon says:

I never bothered about learning how to cook before because my Mom, a kapampangan, is a great cook. It was more fun devouring her heavenly food than preparing them. Things changed when my first child have outgrown baby food and my Mom migrated to the US. Left on my own devices, I had no choice but to learn how to cook – mainly for survival. Fast forward 17 years after and three gorgeous kids, I now consider myself a prolific cook. I have branched out from feeding my family to impressing my friends and colleagues. My kids are egging me to open a restaurant and someday I will. Your question made me look back with much satisfaction and tears in my eyes. When my Mom finally comes home and taste my cooking, I know she’ll be proud of me and will also give me two thumbs up – just like how my kids rate my cooking.

  149. Dana Asad says:

When you consider how much your life is enriched by the act of cooking, you cannot help but realize its importance.

It has the ability of transforming the basic need for sustenance into a magical gesture of giving and receiving of love; what can be a larger testimony of affection than the willing giving of time and effort so that others can be nourished?

I never cooked before quitting my job but i found that the need to fill my time, save money and basically, just eat, one day changed into so much more. As started remembering my mother and pastry filled childhood, cooking became the potential of sharing memories with my children one day, the passing of old family secrets and traditions and the creating of new ones. It became my defense against the unknown that the world brings upon us: no matter what happens, I know that what I’m feeding my family is clean, wholesome and filled with love. It has taught me patience, with myself and with others, and drummed upon me the knowledge that some things just take time. It has helped me become more creative: missing ingredients and time restraints became a challenge. It has also given me personal satisfaction: nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment when you realize that this tasty dish is your creation and yours alone, part of you that you give willingly to others so that they can be part of you too! Sharing a meal, feeding someone, creates a bond and an affinity that is not easily broken. If more people cooked for others and ate together in groups, there would be more love, more laughter and probably more peace and understanding in the world. Ofcourse, this is probably more true for meals that are well prepared and taste good! And that is why everyone should learn how to cook!

The essence of eating an oven-slaved dish is to savor and appreciate the dish because of its taste and quality, not because it makes a person pass another meal time. Cooking a dish is an art in itself, it is made to be appreciated. :-)

To learn how to do something exercises the mind, what more if you learn how to cook? It exercises all your senses that gives you instant gratification, though sometimes not, but that’s how you learn. And if you created a dish that tastes just wonderful, nothing beats to see your family and friends appreciate your cooking or probably hear them say, “Masarap!”, “Yummy!” or just “Mmmmm…” However they express it, it gives you the satisfaction and motivation to cook and exercise your senses again.

Before, I didn’t feel the importance of learning how to cook because take-out foods abound. But when I got married, and much to my surprise, I felt motivated to learn how to cook. Not out of duty because that is what a good wife does. But out of LOVE! Now, I learned that cooking isn’t just to fill my husband’s stomach…It is more to fill his heart with my love…by lovingly serving him home-cooked meals that not only taste good but are nutritious and healthful as well. Most of my recipes come from this site. Thanks to you Ms. Connie for making my time in the kitchen less panicky and more fruitful! :)

These days when there are melamine scare, bird flu, salmonella contamination, it is important that we control what goes in to our family’s
mouths. By learning how to cook, we avoid eating out often, which could increase the risk of getting sick. In times when economic crisis
is also a concern, cooking also saves us a lot of money. By learning how to cook, we can dictate the nourishment that goes into our bodies thus, controlling our diets more effectively. Cooking can also serve as a family time – a time when the kids can help prepare the food and clean up afterwards.

  176. mama jess says:

Cooking is an expression of love. All the labor and all the time spent in the kitchen is a huge testimony of a mom’s dedication to nourish and nurture all the people who partake in the meal. Being able to cook is like sharing a part of a person’s whole being to the meal partakers since all senses are at play during cooking. The sense of touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight. If that is not good enough, then I wouldn’t know what else is :)

  177. alice lanuza says:

Not to mention survival, it’s the highest form of self-gratification. From conceptualizing a recipe, to choosing and buying the freshest ingredients (given budget constraints), tapping your imagination in the presentation/plating –voila! You get a natural high when your kids tell you “mom, you’re the best cooker in the world”. My husband never fails to thank me for the time and effort I put into it. No amount of money can buy the happiness you feel when at the end of the day, you know you fed your family with clean, cheap, nutritious meal and is well appreciated.

Mostly busy parents would bring home take-out foods but it can”t be compared to a real home-cooked meal. I’m a working mom and I’m doing my best to serve fresh and home-cooked meals to my family. We don’t want to put our family’s health at stake because of these commercial foods. Healthy family, that’s one of the secret ingredient to a happy family life.

The importance of learning how to cook will teach us that food is better when it is fresh, seasonal, and healthy. It gives us the joy of bonding and sharing it when it is eaten with the people we love. Even if it not perfect, any food prepared by a member of the family or by other person we know, can bring joy and is special.
