Green Tomato, Shangri-La Plaza

After the very disappointing experience at Crustasia, the next time we went to see a movie at Shangri-La Plaza, there was a big to-do as to where we would eat. Just like before, we had about an hour to kill before the screening, it was mid-afternoon and what we really wanted was something light so that we could eat a full dinner afterward. Ergo, no Sumo Sam for us as we always tend to order too much when we go there — we like the food so much. So, we decided to try something new — a restaurant we hadn’t gone to before. We chose Green Tomato.

The biggest attraction to us was the lack of hangers-on. You know, like Starbucks were people lounge around just to be seen. Green Tomato was practically empty before 4.00 p.m. and that was important. Of course, we realized the risk. Some restaurants are perpetually empty because the food is bad. Still, Green Tomato looked decent and the menu was interesting.

Speedy, Sam and I ordered different sandwiches and we shared with each other small portions of what we ordered.

Mine had chicken, Sam’s had crabstick and Speedy’s was overloaded with meat. And they were all delicious.

Alex, however, had problems with her kiddie mac and cheese. Too bland. She wondered if it didn’t come with a saucer of grated Parmesan on the side. It didn’t.

But the salad was the biggest disappointment. We couldn’t understand what the dressing was or what it was meant to be. Some indiscernible taste. And the pasta in the salad was terribly undercooked. If someone had said al dente, I would have screamed.

I would discover much later that the specialty of Green Tomato is pasta and pizza. Perhaps, if we had ordered pizza, we would have been happier. Still, the sandwiches were good. Three good dishes out of the five we ordered made the experience passable so that means we’re not averse to paying Green Tomato a second visit in the future. And, next time, we’ll order pasta and pizza. And no kiddie stuff like the mac and cheese.
