Since I was very young, I’ve seen fortune cookies in so many movies. And with a very active Chinatown in Manila, which my family has frequented for as long as I can remember, I wondered why I never experienced having fortune cookies served with my meals. Then, I read Amy Tan’s “The Joy Luck Club” and discovered that fortune cookies aren’t really Chinese. Rather, they were an Asian American invention. And they were originally a Japanese confection. Right — all this time, I saw fortune cookies in American movies, not in Chinese films.

The fortune cookies in the photo were bought at Gourdo’s. Something like 80 pesos for a box of fourteen. The fortune in the cookie I opened last night? Well, I’m more intrigued by the numbers than the text. I think I’ll use those numbers as a Lotto combination.

I always thought it’s Chinese, thanks for this trivia.
When I saw the number, I thought of Lotto combination too. Maybe I’ll ask my husband to buy those fortune cookies in Chowking, he’s been saying he wants to dream some “lucky” numbers for Lotto, lol!
If the combination wins, we’ll split the jackpot hehehe
Here’s a pretty interesting presentation where they brought fortune cookies to China just to see how if the Chinese even knew what they were …. many had no clue ….

Reporter Jennifer 8. Lee talks about her hunt for the origins of familiar Chinese-American dishes — exploring the hidden spots where these two cultures have (so tastily) combined to form a new cuisine.

Oh my gosh! What a wonderful presentation.
Hi Ms. Connie,
I’m really happy about your trivia.
I was in Macau last month and I was actually asking the people from the bakeshop if they happen to have fortune cookies…and they don’t even know what a fortune cookie is…
Well, now I know why…
Much thanks!
The look on their faces must have been priceless.
ms. cons, do you know baker’s depot? mas mura sya kesa sa cooks exchange, sobrang mura pero pareho lang naman po ang quality. meron sila buttermilk powder, whole wheat flour, dates, walnuts at madami pa pong iba. i just went sa branch nila sa robinson’s metro east, they also have sa robinson’s galleria, i think it’s their biggest branch. hindi po ako nagwowork dun or something, i just want to share the info. =)
Yes, there is a new branch in Robinson’s Metro East (nearest to where I live), been there, liked the stuff they have. Bit since it’s a store for bakers and not for cooks in general, I still need to go to stores like Cooks Exchange, Gourdo’s and Living Well.
